Double sexual harassment cases between female students and their lecturers hit the social media recently, and the lecturers involved are yet to respond to the allegations.
On Monday, January 8, Aigbeme Okonkwo and Funke Dezarn accused former lecturers of the University of Lagos and Obafemi Awolowo University respectively of sexually harassing them.
Many years after their graduation from the universities, the ladies want the lecturers who wanted them to exchange their body for grades punished for their misconduct.
Although, the constitution specifies nothing less than two years imprisonment for preying lecturers, but we sought students to suggest a punishment for such teachers and here’s what they say.
Students suggest punishment for randy lecturers

Alexandra Coker, Ekiti State University
I think they should be sacked. If a lecturer is found guilty of doing something like that, I think they should be sacked immediately. I think they will be pained if something like sexual harassment is what makes the lose their job.
Tola, Lagos State University
Sacking them will serve as a lesson to other lecturers. When you use one as a scapegoat, I don’t think others will do it again.
Blessing, University of Lagos
As a lecturer, you are supposed to be a guide, a mentor for the students and if you are not playing that role, you shouldn’t be lecturing. However, any lecturer found guilty of sexual harassment should be dismissed immediately.
Bisola, Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti
Apart from sacking them, they can institute a legal action against them for assault. If there is always a legal action against such lecturers, that will serve as a deterrent for others.
Hikmat, Olabisi Onabanjo University
The first punishment I will suggest is sack. Let them be sacked first before anything else. I also think they can be demoted, but they might not really learn from demotion. But if they are sacked and their salary stops, they will learn.
Lilian, Nnamdi Azikiwe University
They have to be prosecuted and get dismissed. You can not sexually harass a student and go scot-free. They have to be fined for their misconduct. If they are dismissed and they don’t know where to start their lives again, then they will realize their wrongs.
We asked students to suggest punishment for randy lecturers, here’s what they sayplay
Legalnaija (Sexual harassment of a student is an offence and liable to up to five years)
Oluwafunmilayo, Moshood Abiola Polytechnic
I think if the student can report the lecturer to the head of the department, the head of the department should not only query the lecturer but also file a report to the admin reporting what the lecturer has done. But based on the level of bribery and corruption that is too rampant in our society now, the lecturer might not get adequate punishment like a suspension without benefit, so I feel the lecturer should be dismissed if he continues to harass the student.
Ilori, Owo Polytechnic
Any lecturer found guilty of such a shameful act should be stripped of his post and as well get punished by the law. Two years imprisonment should be enough.
Kubura, Gateway Polytechnic
When students offends a lecturer, they get punished for their offence. When a lecturer harasses his students, he too should get punished for his crime. Sexual harassment is a crime and the lecturer too should be facing brought to face the consequence of their misconduct either by trial, or dismissal.
